This is Bert. He broke his nose in a drinking accident. He was partying up in his tree with a bunch of squirrels. Apparently they had all consumed too much Sawdust Brandy (yep, it’s a real thing). Well, the little squirrel DJ-Scratchy had put on and cranked the song “Nuts” by David Bowie. The crowd went wild! Everyone was jumping and bouncing in unison. That’s when it all took a bad turn. Bert’s branch cracked but no one heard it. About half way through the song, SNAP! All tumbled down. Most of the squirrels were okay but there was squirrel vomit everywhere and Bert landed on his nose. The hangovers were brutal. He says he doesn’t regret it though. He is within these actual volumes as I try to include my subjects in all of my book carvings. This carving is based on the well-known self-portrait sketch done in red chalk on paper. Since these carvings are done in actual books, I have the opportunity to reveal text that I feel is relevant to my subject even though the text is not actually in context to the subject. Leonardo da Vinci was a scientist as well as an artist. He lived and worked in a time when religion was more prominent and powerful than politics or science. I have found both within these volumes. So, on the right side pages of the piece I have revealed the words “Catholic Truth” and on the left side pages I’ve revealed “Hydrostatic Equilibrium” which is the balanced state of fluid and a basic of physics. Revealing text within these books is a fun inclusion when the opportunity presents itself. There is another interesting aspect of this piece in my opinion. The finish I applied darkened the carved paper portion giving it the appearance of grey stone. I love it when I’m treated with unexpected and wonderful surprises that enhance my work.$6000 “Native American Chief” Carved into five volumes of American Peoples Encyclopedia / 1969 Edition. $6000 Please email for purchase inquiries: lundycupp@gmail.com
