Book Carvings

These are real books carved with no computer assistance or CNC machining.

“Leonardo da Vinci” is carved into the paper of five volumes of Encyclopedia Britannica / 1957 Edition. He is within these actual volumes as I try to include my subjects in all of my book carvings. This carving is based on the well-known self-portrait sketch done in red chalk on paper. Since these carvings are done in actual books, I have the opportunity to reveal text that I feel is relevant to my subject even though the text is not actually in context to the subject. Leonardo da Vinci was a scientist as well as an artist. He lived and worked in a time when religion was more prominent and powerful than politics or science. I have found both within these volumes. So, on the right side pages of the piece I have revealed the words “Catholic Truth” and on the left side pages I’ve revealed “Hydrostatic Equilibrium” which is the balanced state of fluid and a basic of physics. Revealing text within these books is a fun inclusion when the opportunity presents itself.
There is another interesting aspect of this piece in my opinion. The finish I applied darkened the carved paper portion giving it the appearance of grey stone. I love it when I’m treated with unexpected and wonderful surprises that enhance my work
